01 - In a medium saucepan, combine rolled oats, milk, water, maple syrup or honey, and a pinch of salt.
02 - Add ground cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir well to blend the flavors.
03 - Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.
04 - Continue cooking for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring often, until the oats are creamy and most of the liquid is absorbed.
05 - Remove from heat and let the oatmeal stand for 1 minute to thicken.
06 - Divide warm oatmeal between bowls. Top with chopped toasted pecans or almonds, raisins or dried cranberries, and a sprinkle of extra cinnamon.
